Gateways to Enlightenment — Part III — Refinement and Watchfulness of One's Thoughts and Actions & Witnessing
Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri

Shaykh Fadhlalla begins by stressing that even though we have performed the 2 jihads of hijra and purifying our intention, it is dangerous to think the journey is over – we are still in a process and have to be more attentive and diligent. It is very important to have the right companionship to act as mirrors, and keep a watch on yourself so that nothing controls you except the Light in your heart from Allah.

At this stage also hidaya (guidance) is very important. Constantly seeking counsel from the light within will lead to to a rooted station (maqam) where everything is done according to Higher Wisdom.

We are always accountable, understand ourselves, so that what was formerly a tragedy becomes comedy - we laugh at ourselves. Allah will guide us with his light according to the extent of our faith and trust in him. We should not question the means of provision, simply be grateful. In our prayers the heart must be present, so that this third phase becomes a habit.

Shaykh Fadhlalla refers to many Qur'anic verses on the importance of the next world where we will find true security, but we have to beware of the "religious profile".

We must follow the example of the Prophet who was humble and lived simply, outwardly poor but inwardly enriched.

Like Prophet Ibrahim, we need to be honest about our state trusting in Allah’s justice, which is absolute. Allah will lift us higher. Most of our affliction is from ourselves. Once we take on the sibgatullah (colors of The Divine) we will be in the state of Nafs al mutma'inna (the contented self) and return joyfully to the One Lord, having security in His ever-presence.
